Contemporary Designer Profile: Palmer Weiss

Being a writer in the genre of interior design and architecture means always appreciating and respecting all types of designs, but not necessarily loving all the design you write about. This is not the case with today’s contemporary designer profile: Palmer Weiss. Filled with gorgeous patterns, hip and trendy details and homage to Hollywood Regency and Mid-Century Style, we’re not only writing about Weiss and portfolio of designs to give our readers inspiration—we’re writing about her to get inspiration, too!

We basically want to live in every image we see in Palmer Weiss’ online portfolio. Rooms are stylish, trendy, comfortable and cute. Weiss is a master of manipulating texture, pattern, color and light into spaces that at once seem sophisticated and designed, but also functional enough to be lived in. We can see from some of the details we spotted—bold white graphic chairs and lamps, lacquered items, cane details, fluffy shag rugs, animal prints—that the Hollywood Regency style we all love here on this blog is a huge influence in her spaces. But, we also see a ton of Mid-Century Modern details—Sputnik lamps, gorgeous and sleek credenzas, Tulip-inspired coffee tables, Womb Chairs—that take center stage in her décor.

It’s not easy to mix two styles that are so different, what with Hollywood Regency and its luxurious opulence and Mid-Century Modern design that’s sleek and minimal, but she’s somehow managed to find a style of her own that takes the best of both worlds to create incredibly functional and fun spaces. Her use of pattern and color proves she bold, but her rooms are never over-the-top and always livable.

Weiss definitely understands the need to have functional, comfortable spaces. Sure, her spaces feature a lot of furniture pieces and great arrangements, but they are rooms that can easily be enjoyed by a variety of clients—kids and pets included! Really listening to a client’s needs, it’s like Weiss is able to bring a client’s most ambitious and daring interior design dreams down to a manageable and implementable level that can be enjoyed by all.

Practically born into the profession, Weiss’ mother is an accomplished interior designer and her father is in real estate. She was raised in Charleston, South Carolina, and you can really see a lot of Southern-inspiration/influence in her designs. As her bio describes, “She admires the way Southerners embrace their family heritage, formality and tradition in their homes but are also not afraid to express a few of their eccentricities as well. This rich background, combined with 14 years of living in Northern California, has allowed her to develop a unique style that both respects tradition and embraces new ideas.” Now a San-Francisco-based interior designer, we can't help but notice that along with great style, Weiss also has great taste: we’ve spotted some Swank Lighting in one of her recent interior design projects!
