A Perfect Pair: Eisler and Swank!

If yesterday’s designer influence was a bit of an enigma due to the lack of information about him available on the internet, then it should stand to reason that today’s Perfect Pair would have a little bit of mystery attached to it. What mystery, you ask? Normally finding a perfect pair of Swank Lighting lamps to match with a furniture piece is easy, but today we went through several options before settling on the right one, and it was one we would have least expected! See if you agree:

This Credenza by Martin Eisler just absolutely bowls us over. Made in Brazil in the 1950’s for the Brazilian company Forma, it’s simple, exciting, colorful and neutral, all at the same time. Featuring three doors and four drawers, the whole piece is made out of the wonderfully exotic jacaranda wood. We love the subtle details the most. The top and sides of the piece are seriously straight, but the bottom comes to a soft, inverted “V” shaped point that mimics the gorgeous inverted “V” shaped legs. The doors have no ornament except for the amazing wood grain of the exotic jacaranda. In a great textural touch, the drawers feature an overlapping pattern, like roof tiles, that keeps the piece interesting yet simple.

Swank Lighting’s Vintage Murano Table Lamps in Baby Blue on Lucite are an ethereal dream. Made in Italy in the 1950’s they are prized both for their shape and their color. They feature wonderfully sloping bodies that end with large, curvy and bulbous bottoms. Their color is a cloudy, hazy, light baby blue with just a hint of great. Creamy yet soft, it’s more like looking at fabric than hard glass. Placed on top of Lucite bases, they are a complete lighting delight.

So what made this pair just a mystery? When we first started searching for the perfect set of lamps, we tried to go with warm colors. We figured those would absolutely sing next to the warm tones of the wood; we were wrong. Lamp after lamp we placed beside it (in photograph form, of course) to see that reds, oranges and yellows just absolutely fall flat. Then we decided on another course: this light blue! It was with this combination we felt the “click” of a perfect pair. And, considering that blue and yellow are two colors that naturally create excitement and contrast, the lamps and the credenza appear to go together nicely.
