The Modern and Natural Designs of Phillip Lloyd Powell!

It’s always a pleasure to study the careers of influential designers who lived long, full lives. It’s such a great opportunity to see how one’s style evolves over the decades, but also retains the specific look that becomes inherent to the designs of the creator. Phillip Lloyd Powell is a great example. He lived a long time, worked for a large part of his life and created some really beautiful furniture pieces.

Just looking at his work, you can see why many people are fans. His pieces are warm, welcoming and sexy. Full of curves and usually made of wood, his pieces definitely exude a certain Mid-Century Modern style, but they also transcend any particular time period, making them classic and timeless. Though his designs aren’t quite for everyone, they are lovely and flexible enough to fit in with almost any person’s tastes.

Even though he worked for a long time, he produced a shockingly low number of pieces in comparison to other furniture designers of his time period. He was no recluse, but he wasn’t exactly into publicizing himself, so he’s not as well-known as other designers of the time, but he actually worked and was inspired by two big names, specifically Paul Evans and George Nakashima, both of whom’s influence can be seen in Powell’s work.

Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1919, Powell originally studied engineering, but moved to New Hope, Pennsylvania after World War II. There, he refurbished antiques, made furniture, built his own house by hand, and even opened up his own store, where he was able to explore his own style of furniture making. Around 1951 is win Paul Evans came into Powell’s life, and together they did many projects and exhibitions. More of an artist than a designer, his work sometimes reached fantastical designs, but mostly are just gorgeous additions to any space.
