Contemporary Designer Profile: Amy Lau!

We’d say today’s contemporary designer is one of the most unique designers we’ve seen in awhile, and for that she’s gotten a large part of our love! Read on for why we think Amy Lau is such a fabulous designer.

We spent a long time perusing Lau’s website portfolio. There’s just something so wonderfully unique about her interiors; they don’t look the same as other designers today. In fact, they almost feel un-categorizable. We were even more delighted when the two things that came to mind as we were looking through the great color photos happened to be true when we read her bio: she’s from the Southwest and she majored in art.

You can immediately see how those two things about her past have influenced her style. No, we’re not implying that there are wolves with bandanas howling at the moon motifs in her interiors, but her favored color palettes definitely have a very Southwestern modern feel to them: soft beiges, earthy red colors, browns, oranges, creams and more. It gives her spaces a very natural feel, which she heightens with often including natural elements that hark to her hometown landscapes, like twisted branches and more.

But her history in art is also evident. Her rooms almost look painted; you can sense her strong ability to manipulate compositions, colors are splashed throughout the room wisely, and she has a great eye for including actual art into the rooms. And, while she definitely favors a natural color palette, we saw some rooms in there that could only have been imagined by an art major.

Certainly a modern interior designer, her rooms do all feel quite comfortable, and we loved spotting retro details and accessories weave their way through the spaces, leaving homes feeling full, natural and sophisticated. Since starting her interiors firm in 2001, she’s obviously had a ton of experience in design, and been featured in many print and television publications, like Luxe Magazine, The New York Times and even HGTV programs. Catch color fever by checking out her portfolio yourself!
