We’ve actually mentioned Finn Juhl twice before today, each time in one of our weekly “1stdibs newest listing” posts. This discovery doesn’t shock us: his pieces are eye-catching and obviously historically important pieces of Mid-Century modern design.
So what do his pieces look like? He’s definitely got a distinct style that is obviously influential. There are a lot of sleek, thin elements like rails and arms that lend a sharp and fierce look to the pieces. Because he worked primarily in the 1940s, just before Mid-Century Modernism really, his work is a rather great example of transitional style. Definitely modern, you can see some remnants of past designs, like Art Nouveau, in the interesting angles of backs and cushions.
It seems that Juhl was interested in using and highlighting natural materials and colors, but not just the blond wood we’ve come to recognize as Danish design. We see a whole medley of warm wood tones that enhance the shape of each piece, among which you can count in his designs chairs, ottomans, case goods like credenzas and buffets, and sofas. We also note a number of gorgeous accessories for the table like wood bowls.
Though each piece is powerful as a visual element in of itself, we can’t help but notice how gorgeous and strong of a look a number of pieces together can appear, especially his dining chairs. With his strong lines, warm colors and distinct style, it’s no wonder that he’s been credited with spreading the influence of Danish modernism to America and beyond.
