Inspiration and Antiques at 1stdibs!

While you’ve probably heard of the furniture, art and jewelry website 1stdibs before, do you know about its background, or even all that it offers? We’re going to be highlighting all the amazing things 1stdibs is doing for the design world in today’s post.

1stdibs was created in 2001 as the brilliant idea of Michael Bruno, a former San Francisco real estate broker who had a penchant for antiques, specifically of the Parisian flea market variety. When the site first premiered, it was slightly different than it is today. Bruno first began by charging site users a twenty percent commission to purchase items on their behalf. In 2003, he began adding items from New York showrooms to the site, and so began the current model of 1stdibs: monthly subscription fees paid by dealers with gorgeous wares to sell.

Even though 1stdibs offers antiques from countless dealers in over 20 cities throughout the world, Bruno still handpicks each dealer that sells on his site. It’s this attention to the detail and qualities of the dealers and items that has undoubtedly contributed to 1stdibs’ wild success. How else can you explain a website that frequently sells pieces of furniture with price tags of over $10,000 online? It’s a testament to the quality and trustworthiness of both the business and the dealers that so many people purchase such high-end goods through the Internet.

As of last year, 1stdibs claims over 250,000 regular users, many of them professional decorators and designers, and they are contributing to the site’s 30,000 daily views. It’s possible these 250,000 users are attracted to 1stdibs because of its reputation alone, but there are also many other features to this site that are turning these visitors into repeat users.

Besides, of course, the photos of gorgeous antiques, art and jewelry, visitors to the 1stdibs site can also delight in its ease of use. Generous and user-friendly search menus adorn the right side of the screen and help a designer or homeowner narrow down (or even start) a search. While we personally like the search options, we love the extra “goodies” found on 1stdibs. By goodies, we mean the amazing articles 1stdibs produces. Featuring interviews with top designers, introspectives of design influences, articles on upcoming trends and even book reviews of the design books to read, 1stdibs is your first stop for inspiration, research and yes, antiques. Visit them on the web at 1stdibs.com.
