Luxury And Style with Kelly Wearstler

You might recognize her as the stylishly dressed and loudly opinionated judge from Bravo’s Top Design, but interior decorator Kelly Wearstler puts her money where her mouth is. Since establishing her firm, Kelly Wearstler Interior Design, a decade ago in Los Angeles, she’s become accepted as one of the most important contemporary designers of luxury interiors in the Hollywood Regency style--and she happens to be the perfect person to gain inspiration from when looking to add a bit of glam to your own spaces.

Originally from South Carolina, Wearstler received her BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art, and not long after moved to California to begin transforming interior spaces. Known for her colorful, sometimes over-the-top, “modern baroque” spaces, she has a distinctive style that many clients adore. A few of her more famous residential clients have included movie star Ben Stiller and the Chairman of Universal Pictures. What really made Wearstler famous though are her commercial spaces---namely the hotels and resorts around the world she’s worked on.

In design circles, she’s most famous for her transformation of the boutique Viceroy resorts in Southern California, Miami, South Beach, Anguilla and Mexico's Riviera Maya—not only making the interiors beautiful, but helping make the Viceroy name itself associated with luxury, glam and style. She is also the leading design eye for the Avalon in Beverly Hills and The Tides, a growing collection of vibrantly chic beach resorts in South Beach and the Caribbean. Design lovers might also remember Wearstler for her amazing work on the BG restaurant and lounge at Manhattan's Bergdorf Goodman.

Not just adored by her fellow designers, the media has showered her with accolades, even naming her “one of the design world's top tastemakers” by House & Garden and honoring her among House Beautiful's best designers for seven years running.

Wearstler's first book, Modern Glamour: The Art of Unexpected Style, was a hit as soon as it was published, landing on the Los Angeles Times bestseller almost immediately and offering up great design advice and even better photos. Her next book, Domicilium Decoratus, featured Wearstler’s former Beverly Hills residence. When Domicilium Decoratus was first published in 2005 it was a limited-edition folio, a later more general edition was published in the next year. As you can imagine, many more books on design and lifestyle are in the plans. Wearstler also lends her writing and style to the fashion world’s publications, like Harper's Bazaar, Elle and W; she was even named one of the best dressed of 2007 by Vogue.

So if browsing Wearstler’s portfolio and reading her books leaves you needing to decorate your home like her style immediately, you’re in luck. Wearstler happily shares her glamorous style through the creation of several product lines for both design professionals and homeowners alike. Her products officially launched in Fall 2007 with the opening of the Kelly Wearstler boutique at Bergdorf Goodman. The boutique showcases a range of decorative and stylish home accessories designed by Wearstler. A gorgeous collection of handmade carpets debuted in Spring 2008 for The Rug Company, and a fabric and trim collection for Groundworks at Lee Jofa quickly followed. Also in the products plans is a design a book of wallcoverings with Cole & Son, along with table linens, bedding, tabletop accessories, decorative pillows, and throws.

Married to hotel developer Brad Korzen, Wearstler currently resides in California with Korzen and their two sons, but always keeps busy. While her designs are lavish and even too over-the-top for some tastes, her style and talent is undeniable. If anything, she reminds us all to infuse a bit of glamour into everyday life!
