Phillipe Nigro and Confluences!

We’ve covered a number of internationally talented and bright designers here at Swank Lighting, such as Pierre Paulin, Charles and Ray Eames and the Bouroullec brothers. Today we bring you the miniature biography of French designer Philippe Nigro. He’s recently debuted a new furniture line for Ligne Roset called Confluences that features upholstered pieces made up of different seating units that can be arranged according to the user's style. We got the chance to ask Nigro some questions about his new line, his background and what’s in store for his future.

Born in Nice, France, Nigro graduated from the esteemed Ecole Boulle in Paris in 1997. He first gained both experience and notoriety by working with the famous Michele de Lucchi, creator of the well-known Tolomeo light in 1987 for the Artemide brand. In 2006, Nigro got the opportunity to collaborate with de Lucchi on three new lights for Artemide, including the best selling Artemide Lara and the Artemide Sarissa.

Also operating as an independent designer while assisting de Lucchi, Nigro has worked for prominent furniture brands like Poltrona Frau, Felicerossi, Danese, Alias, Urifor and Nube. He’s also worked for brands outside of furniture manufacturing, such as Olivetti, Compaq, Telecom Italia, the Italian postal service and Van Cleef and Arpels.

His furniture designs, while incredibly modern and beautiful, also tend to have adaptive and flexible elements built right into them, lending them the ability to appeal to a more worldwide audience. His Universal Base table from earlier this year is a great example, which features a stylish base that can allow any square or rectangle top to be attached, no tools required. Nigro’s Twin Chair begins as a wood crafted piece, but then can be clad with a metal overlay to change the appearance and provide a stronger and tougher surface, all dependent on the needs of the user. His Sans Titre modular shelving unit continues on this same flexible trend by featuring interchangeable units that again, can be customized by the user.

The furniture line Confluences really leans on all of his previous experience and work. Simple in its idea but brilliant in its delivery, Confluences is an upholstered line with different series of seating units that can be put together and taken apart like a puzzle but most importantly, re-arranged to suit the user's style and needs. Available in a gorgeous fabric texture and a range of colors, this new line for Ligne Roset is poised to be an important one, both for the brand and the designer.

“How can one design a settee which satisfies the requirements of the majority of users? Different people have different physiognomies. And then there is the subjectivity of taste. Confluences is a ‘reconciliatory’ settee, since it draws its inspiration from such differences,” says Nigro. As to his future, one can only expect that Nigro will continue to work on projects that deliver both aesthetics and function to the design world. For more information on Nigro, visit his website.
