Last week we combined two natural, organic styles with Alvar Aalto’s Type 31 Chair and Swank Lighting’s Labyrinth Coral Table lamps. Today, we’re mixing up two contemporary, subdued pieces to create a relaxing yet interesting composition.

George Nakashima’s work involved natural materials placed in simple and contemporary shapes, creating lots of chairs, benches and tables with a Japanese-inspired look. While none of his pieces are overwhelmingly famous, his work is recognizable by several characteristics, like uneven edges, visible knots in wood, and American woodworking details like chair back spindles.
The chair and ottoman we’ve chosen today are made out of walnut wood and feature lots of smart, modern lines. With a wide base and wide back with many narrow spindles, the chair appears both modern and vintage at the same time. The deep, rectangular cushions are of a greenish-yellow color fabric and complement the tone of the wood perfectly.

We’d pick to go with a Nakashima chair
Swank Lighting’s Vintage Murano Table Lamps in a Pulegoso Net Pattern. We love the baby or sky blue color of the glass. The soft, feminine, and rounded shape of the lamp is a perfect contrast to the sharp, masculine straight lines of the chair and ottoman. The texture created by the pattern on the lamp is detailed and interesting, but not so startling to be overwhelming or take away from anything else. Together, they create an interesting yet comfortable pair, sure to jazz up a corner or add interest to a living room. And the colors yellow and blue are a natural, exciting color combination!
