Contemporary Designer Profile: Jeffery Alan Marks

We’re ultra-impressed with today’s contemporary designer: his designs are vibrant, colorful, full-bodied and bold. Not everyone would be able to live in one of his interiors—they are for the strong hearted and gutsy, but those who like to live with excitement in their rooms will love the portfolio of Jeffery Alan Marks, whose interiors are certainly exciting us!

The strongest element or characteristic to all of Marks’ interiors has to be the sheer fearlessness of his approach to design. In just a small sampling of photographs of interiors he’s design, you could see: large-scale and boldly colored wallpaper, over-sized furniture, themed-furniture, strong textures—no idea or thought is off-limits in his designs. We especially love his exotic or globally-themed spaces; they are both respectful of the cultures whose themes they are inspired from and yet also look towards the future and are interpreted modernly.

The visual proof of his boldness isn’t the only thing you can take away from his design fearlessness. You can also assume, and correctly, that his clients must have the ultimate respect and trust for him. How else could you explain the things his clients let him try with the rooms he designs?! There’s a room with an upside down row boat—complete with two (well-attached) oars—on the ceiling for goodness sakes!

Marks has quite the internationally-acquired design education: he’s lived all over the world, in places like London, Paris and Milan, so his work has a worldly and sophisticated air to it. He himself claims to treasure clean lines, proportion and working from the “ground up” on a project so he can ensure everything works together perfectly. His firm’s office is in Santa Monica, but projects range all over the place, and plenty of projects are on the horizon for this designer, who has even been named one ofHouse Beautiful Magazine’s Top 100 American Designers.
