Contemporary Designer Profile: Darryl Carter

Not many contemporary designers can claim the distinction of having crafted and spread a new design style; what with all the amazing styles that exist today and have existed in the past, it’s hard to imagine what’s left to discover. Darryl Carter has certainly stumbled upon a formula that works, though, and by his impressive success, it stands to reason many people love his new genre, as well.

Calling his new style, the “new traditional”, Carter encourages his clients and homeowners around the world to be true to what their real lifestyle is. Every one of us is completely unique, so each of our spaces should be truly different. Emphasizing the individual when it comes to interiors, all his designed-spaces have his signature new traditional look, but fit the homeowner perfectly.

Though it seems like we use the word a lot here on Swank Lighting, Carter’s spaces really do exude sophistication, but sophistication partnered tightly with a sense of restraint. His style has even been called “neoclassism” because of the large swaths of neutral colors and clean lines that make up many of his interiors. His interior spaces are overwhelmingly livable; they’re gorgeous to see, but also comfortable to experience physically. His designs have also aptly been called timeless.

So what do his spaces look like anyway? Neutral palettes, chalky and gray colors, a variety of traditional materials like wood and stone, edited vignettes and clean spaces. His spaces are always very put together and organized; everything has a place. This isn’t to say his interiors are stuffy; he also blends modern and contemporary elements seamlessly. The careful and thoughtful balance between traditional elements and modern details is what makes his style so unique.

A resident of Washington, D.C., you can bet that Carter’s style works perfectly in the traditional homes of politicians, homeowners and other D.C. residents, who often want to respect their gorgeous and stately residences but also infuse them with a little modernity and style. Not only popular with clients, his work has been spotted in tons of media outlets like Town and Country, Elle Decor, Metropolitan Home, and O at Home. He even makes appearances on television design programs. Be sure to check out his website for lots of “new traditional” inspiration!
