A Perfect Pair: Tenreiro and Swank Lighting!

Yesterday we fell head over heels for the brilliant combination of Mid-Century Modern design and Brazilian natural materials and details that are present in the fabulous furniture portfolio of designer Joaquim Tenreiro. It was hard to even choose a favorite piece of his, but we went with a chair that has a lot going for it, and grabbed a Swank Lighting lamp that we think goes divinely with it.

This pair of Loose Mantle Armchairs by Joaquim Tenreiro, created in Brazil in the 1960’s, is a perfect example of Tenreiro’s ability to combine Mid-Century Modern style with the sensibilities of Brazilian design. He was known for using indigenous materials, and this piece is no different. The chair is made of jacaranda wood and leather. The design of the wood frame is straight lines, but the pieces that make the frame are rounded wood pieces. Then, the addition of the leather cushions almost appears slung onto the frame, making the whole composition seem so casual and laid back.

Swank Lighting’s Salmon Calcite Boulder Accent Table Lamp is like looking at an ancient rock formation. Its natural beauty is stunning, surprising and hard to keep your eyes off. It features a beautiful boulder of salmon-colored calcite mounted on a Lucite chunk base, and with solid brass details. The lamp has a strong feeling of masculinity because of its uneven edges and heavy-feel, but the colors and delicacy of the pattern also give it a very feminine look, too. This natural balance makes the lamp very relaxing and comforting.

The most obvious thing Tenreiro’s chair and Swank Lighting’s lamp have in common is the first reason why we chose them together: they both give off amazing amounts of natural beauty. The colors of the leather upholstery in the chair complement perfectly the salmon colors of the lamp. The uneven edges and shape of the lamp contrast nicely with the strict framework of the chair. Together they just make a nice combination of natural and modern design styles!
