Contemporary Designer Profile: Alex Papachristidis

In the first photograph of a room designed by interior decorator Alex Papachristidis that we saw, a beautifully white, feminine room with traditional furnishings, soft fabrics and bright light is shocked, quite strongly, by the centerpiece: a huge, abstract, circular multi-colored painting that looks more like an artist’s palette than an artist’s work. It’s this strong dichotomy that really sets Papachristidis’ work apart.

Papachristidis is definitely a “Magazine Designer,” meaning his rooms all look so gorgeous they’re in a constant state of being in a magazine photo shoot. Much of his style has a heavy traditional tone to it: furnishings have traditional shapes and wall colors have soft tones. Many of his projects also have strong architectural details like bold moldings, panels and more.

It’s his ability to mix these lovely traditional details with striking modern and contemporary art and accessories that really makes Papachristidis a favorite designer of ours. His rooms aren’t design mutts, though. They aren’t eclectic transitional spaces that create some bohemian feel. His spaces exude sophistication and luxury; they look like they’ve always existed and will always exist. The word “fresh” is often associated with his name, and one can see that fact while perusing his online portfolio. His ability to mix and match styles so deftly to create comfortable homes is paramount and obvious.

Papachristidis was born and raised in New York City (no surprise there as to how he could be so cutting edge with his designs) and attended the Parsons School of Design. His first big project happened while he was still in school, a Manhattan apartment, and soon the projects just kept trickling in. According to Papachristidis, he never looked back! His firm was established in 1987, and his travels around the country and in Europe partnered with his early real-project experience make him one dynamic designer.

His designs can be found all over the world at this point, from far off places like London and Saudi Arabia, to places all over the country, like Manhattan, the Hamptons, Connecticut, Florida, Texas and Colorado. Though mainly residential, he’s worked on some commercial products like recently completing a top-ranking golf club in the Hamptons.

For someone with so many credentials, you might think Papachristidis is either stuck-up or inaccessible, but clients swear that he is always open to their input and ideas and very easy to work with. He’s successful enough that he could give a lot of duties to other people, but he sees a project through until the end and through every detail.

Alex Papachristidis’ work has been featured in House & Garden, Elle Décor, House Beautiful, Southern Accents, Hampton Style, New York Home, and The New York Times. You can see some lovely photos of his work at his website.
