Thomas O’Brien is the man behind the wildly successful Aero Studios, known the world over for their exquisite ability to transform blank rooms into gorgeous homes. Since arriving on the decorating scene, as they say, he’s been touted as one of the furthermost proponents of a style called “warm modernism,” where clean lines and classic shapes are revered, but it never forgets that these are rooms people must live in. Rooms are warm—they have life, they aren’t perfect, they are welcoming—in warm modernism.
Now if you’ve already been to O’Brien’s website, you might notice that he’s not the usual sort of contemporary designer that we normally profile on Swank Lighting. In fact, he’s more of a furniture designer and merchant. But, we really gravitated toward one of the titles he gave himself: tastemaker. Thomas O’Brien is a tastemaker—he’s a contemporary designer who is doing a huge part in shaping what homes around the country (and world, to some degree) look like, and that is in large part due to his overwhelming success in so many different facets of home décor design.
He and his design team have partnered with some of the biggest names in furniture and home décor design, like Hickory Chair, Lee Jofa, Reed & Barton, Target, Visual Comfort and more. Through these companies that both sell to the public and to the trade, he has shared his ideas and vision of warm modernism in an accessible way. We really respect his ability to shape and inspire so many people’s personal homes. In this way, he’s almost more influential than someone who only designs homes—he’s reaching all sorts of people and helping them create their own lovely spaces.
Other interior designers, retail stores and home owners are hardly the only fans of Thomas O’Brien’s work; he’s quite lauded by many professionals in the field and many shelter publications, proof that he certainly is quite the stylemaker. His designs and his work have been seen in House and Garden, (the now defunct) Domino, Elle Décor, Veranda, Country Home and many more. Be sure to check out his website for lots of inspiring photos and look for Thomas O'Brien products if you are in the middle of decorating your home!
